Urban Climate Oasis Milano
A waste heat (datacenter) powered Algae laboratory
Markus Jeschaunig (AT)
The project is a showcase to demonstrate the reactivation of lost energy potentials in a city. The all-year-long available energy of a datacenter on the Human Technopole Campus is the starting point of the project “Urban Climate Oasis Milano”. A temporary greenhouse structure at adjacent to the research building (Incubator 1) provides a space for growing microalgae, powered only by waste heat from exhaust shafts on the roof during the winter. Meanwhile the space can be used as a meeting room or relaxing area for scientists – as spaces for thinking for thinking and inspiration often are missing in stated facilities – the transparent urban oasis allows a general public to get in touch with the science, while researchers can present what they do in a public. Transdisciplinarity: here science communication meets art, technology and circularity.
